Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD released security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
