Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

As I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and earning best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits he must to control his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
