The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An freshly coined initialism came to light a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, as stated by medical experts like paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a minor who has lost their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of young amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors returning from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, just as it disavows all charges it is accused of. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the projected longevity of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
