The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – originating from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
