A extensive search and recovery operation is actively ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two missing boats carrying relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Maritime Search and Rescue Missions Deployed

Mexico has dispatched naval teams and search planes to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board no fewer than 9 crew members, according to a navy statement.

The boats had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Relief to Cuba

Cuba has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island struggles through repeated nationwide blackouts.

"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson for the convoy said.

The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"The group is working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Earlier Aid Mission

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the yacht in which Castro returned to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, drugs, formula milk, bicycles and food.

Broader Political Context

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over fifty thousand surgeries cancelled in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Political measures have been ramped up over the past months, with comments from different leaders highlighting the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.

In response to certain statements, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that early stages of discussions had begun, although their current progress remains unclear.

The Mexican navy said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to locate the vessels and ensure the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
