Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
