Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address
During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his term.
A Historic Figure
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

A Costly Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- No-cost bus transit
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Headwinds

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
